10/31 Samhain Workshop: Make A Botanical Altar Broom

Samhain Workshop: Make A Botanical Altar Broom
Saturday, October 31 | 2–3:30 PM
at Kaya Holistic
At the turning of the year, we pause to honor what has been, gather the harvest, and make space for what is yet to come.
Join us at Kaya for an afternoon of seasonal storytelling, botanical exploration, and hands-on making as we celebrate Samhain—a traditional harvest festival marking the threshold between autumn and winter, and a time for remembrance, reflection, and transition.
Together, we’ll explore the rich lore and symbolism of the besom, or ritual broom. Long associated with cleansing, protection, thresholds, and sweeping away what no longer serves, the besom has become an enduring symbol within folk and witchcraft traditions.
You’ll then create your own decorative botanical besom—a small altar broom to hang near a doorway, place upon your altar, or simply bring into your home as a beautiful seasonal reminder.
Working with broomcorn, natural wood branches, dried botanicals from BeneVivendo Farms, dried fruits, herbs, flowers, and other seasonal elements, you’ll create a one-of-a-kind besom inspired by the season.
We’ll explore:
- The meaning and traditions of Samhain
- The history, folklore, and symbolism of the besom
- The broom as a symbol of cleansing, protection, and threshold crossing
- Botanicals associated with remembrance, protection, and seasonal transition
- Seasonal herbs, flowers, and dried fruits
- Simple techniques for creating and binding a decorative besom
- Ways to incorporate your finished besom into an altar or home space
A besom can be more than a beautiful object. Traditionally used symbolically rather than for physical sweeping, it can serve as a reminder to clear, release, protect, and make space for what comes next.
No previous experience is needed. This is a creative, hands-on experience rather than a traditional broom-making class. Your finished besom is intended as a decorative altar or home piece rather than a functional household broom.
All materials are provided, and each participant will leave with a handcrafted Samhain besom made from natural and seasonal materials.
Come gather around the table, work with your hands, and honor the turning of the year.
